One Hundred Beautiful Verses Celebrating Love

وما كنتُ ممن يدخلُ العشقُ قلبَهُ = ولكنّ من يُبصِرْ
جفونكِ يَعشقُ

Love was
never able to enter my heart; but seeing your eyes one inevitably falls in
love.

أغرّكِ مني أنّ حُبّكِ قاتلي = وأنكِ مهما تأمُري القلبَ يَفعلُ؟

Are you
elated that your love kills me, and that whatever you ask of my heart it
unquestioningly obeys?

يهواكَ ما عشتُ الفؤادُ فإن أمُتْ = يتبعْ صدايَ صداكَ عندَ
الأقبرِِِ

As long as
I live my heart loves you; and when I die, my echo will follow yours even to
the grave.

أنتِ النعيمُ لقلبي و العذابُ لهُ = فما أمرّكِ في قلبي وأحلاكِ

You are the
bliss of heaven and the torture of hell to my heart; how sweet and how bitter
you are to this heart of mine!

وما عجبي موت المحبينَ في الهوى = و لكن بقاءَ العاشقينَ عجيبُ

I never
wonder why lovers die of love; but I am amazed how those who fall in love can
remain alive!

لقد دبَّ الهوى لكِ في فؤادي = دبيب دمِ الحياةِ إلى عروقي

Your love
crawls gently in my heart, with the same tingling sensation that blood makes,
when flowing in my veins and arteries.

إن يهدمُ العشاقُ ركنَ ولائهم = فبناءُ حبي راسخُ الأركانِ

Should
lovers tear down the edifice of their loyalty, the foundations of my love are
unshakable, defying destruction.

لو كانَ قلبي معي ما اخترتُ غيركمُ = ولا رضيتُ سواكم في الهوى بدَلا

Had my
heart been with me, I would have chosen none but you; nor would I have
exchanged your love for anyone else’s.

لستُ أنسى من نأت عنيَ ما = دام لي في هذه الدنيا رمقْ

So long as
I live, I shall never forget the beloved who has removed herself from my sight.

عيناكِ نازلتا القلوبَ فكلها = إما جريح أو مصاب المقتلِ

Your eyes
waged a fierce battle against all hearts, causing them to either bleed or
helplessly agonize.

وإني لأهوى النومَ في غير حينهِ = لعلَ لقاءً في المنامِ يكونُ

O, how I
desire to fall asleep at any moment, perchance I may see the beloved in my
dreams!

ولولا الهوى ما ذلّ في الأرضِ = عاشقٌ ولكن عزيز العاشقينَ ذليلُ

If it
weren’t for love, no lover on earth would be subdued; nonetheless, even the
mightiest lover is easily subdued.

نقـّلْ فؤادكَ حيث شئتَ من الهوى = ما الحبُّ إلا للحبيبِ الأولِ

Let your
heart roam and browse in fields of affection, true and lasting love, however,
belongs only to the first love.

إذا شئتَ أن تلقى المحاسنَ كلها = ففي وجه من تهوى جميعُ المحاسنِ

If you wish
to see all the charming and beautiful things in the world, you need not look
beyond the face of your beloved.

لا تحاربْ بناظريكَ فؤادي = فضعيفان يغلبان قويا

Fight me
not with your two eyes; two weaklings can beat and defeat a strong one.

إذا ما رأتْ عيني جمالكَ مُقبلاً = وحقكَ يا روحي سكرتُ بلا شربِ

Whenever my
eyes spot your approaching beauty, I assure you, dearest, that I become
inebriated even without a drink.

كتبَ الدمعُ بخدّي عهدهُ = للهوى و الشوقُ يملي ما كتبْ

Tears have
written an eternal pledge to love: words of abiding loyalty, dictated by
longing, indelibly inscribed on my cheeks.

أحبكَ حُبين حبُّ الهوى = وحبُّ لأنكَ أهلٌ لذاكَ

I love you
two loves: one is romantic and one because you simply deserve of be loved.

رأيتُ بها بدراً على الأرض ماشياً = ولم أرَ بدراً قـّط يمشي على
الأرض

In her, I
saw a full moon walking on earth, though never before have I seen a moon on
earth walking.

قالوا الفراق غداً لا شك قلتُ لهم = بل موت نفسي من قبل الفراق غداً

They said,
tomorrow is the separation from the beloved; I said rather tomorrow is the
death of my soul, before the moment of separation arrives.

قفي ودعينا قبل وشك التفرّق = فما أنا من يحيا إلى حينَ نلتقي

Stop and
bid me farewell before separation becomes a reality; for I am unlikely to live
until we meet again.

ولو لم تكن عندي كسمعي وناظري = فما نظرت عيني ولا سمعت أذني

Had you not
been as dear to me as my eyes and ears, my eyes would not see, nor would my
ears hear.

ضممتكِ حتى قلتُ ناري قد انطفتْ = فلمْ تـُطفَ نيراني وزيدَ وقودها

When I
embraced you so close, I thought the fire of my passion would die down; my
fires never subsided, their flames roared instead.

لأخرجنَ من الدنيا وحبكمُ = بينَ الجوانح لم يشعرْ به أحدُ

When I
leave this world, I will depart with your love hidden deep in my heart; a
closely guarded secret, to no mortal revealed.

تتبع الهوى روحي في مسالكهِ = حتى جرى الحبُ مجرى الروح في الجسدِ

My soul
pursued love on its intricate paths, until it became an inseparable part of my
being.

أحبكِ حباً لو يفيضُ يسيرهُ = على الخلق ماتَ الخلقُ من شدة الحبِّ

My love for
you is so great, even a tiny portion of it would flood the world; drowning its
people in a deluge of love.

وأثقل محمولٍ على العينِ دمعها = إذا بانَ أحبابٌ وعزّ إيابُ

The
heaviest burden on the eye is its tears, when loved ones depart with no
hoped-for return in sight.

أنتَ ماضٍ و في يديكَ فؤادي = ردّ قلبي و حيثُ ما شئتَ فامضِِ

You took my
heart and are now going away; first give my heart back to me, and then you may
go where you will.

ولي فؤادٌ إذا طالَ العذابُ بهِ = هامَ اشتياقاً إلى لقيا معذبهِ.

My heart is
such that the more it is tormented, the fonder it grows of its tormentor.

ما عالجَ الناسَ مثل الحبِ من سقمٍ = و لا برى مثلهُ عظما ًولا جسدا

Love is the
best cure for people’s ills, and the most injurious to ssss and soul.

وإن محلاً أنتَ فيه لواسعٌ = وإن زماناً عشتَ فيهِ لطيّبُ

Your
presence renders any place spacious and accommodating; time spent with you is
most fulfilling, ecstatically sweet.

هجرتكِ حتى قيلَ لا يعرفُ الهوى = وزرتكِ حتى قيلَ ليس لهُ صبرا.

I kept my
distance from you; it was interpreted as lacking in love. However, when I paid
you a prolonged visit, others said I was incapable of staying away from you.

قالت جننتَ بمن تهوى فقلتُ لها = العشقُ أعظمُ مما بالمجانينِ

She said
you have been driven insane by love; I said insane people are indeed the
greatest lovers.

فحبكَ يا حبيبي أطابَ عيشي = وهمسكَ يا أنيسي جلا كروبي

Your love,
beloved, has made my life most delightful; your whispers dispelled my every
gloom.

و قلتُ شهودي في هواكِ كثيرة ٌ = وأَصدَقهَا قلبي ودمعي مسفوحُ.

I said
there are many who bear witness to my love for you; most truthful are my heart
and my copious tears.

أردُ إليهِ نظرتي وهو غافلٌ = لتسرقَ منهُ عيني ما ليسَ داريا.

My eyes
glance surreptitiously at her, imperceptibly stealing her exotic charm.

لها القمرُ الساري شقيقٌ وإنها = لتطلعُ أحياناً لهُ فيغيبُ

She and the
full moon seem like twins; yet light emanating from her countenance is even
brighter at times.

وإن حكمتْ جارتْ عليّ بحكمها = ولكن ذلك الجورُ أشهى من العدلِ

She judges
me so unjustly, yet such unjustness is sweeter to me than justice itself..

ملكتَ قلبي و أنتَ فيهِ = كيفَ حويتَ الذي حواكَ؟

You have
taken possession of my heart while living within it! How were you able to
contain that which by it you are contained?

قلْ لل****ِ كيفَ أنعمُ بعدكمْ = وأنا المسافرُ والفؤادُ مقيمُ؟

Tell the
beloved that life without her is joyless for me; how can I enjoy life when I
left my heart behind?

عذبيني بكل شيءٍ سوى الصدِّ = فما ذقتُ كالصدودِ عذابا

Punish me
if you will, but never reject me; for rejection is the severest punishment you
can ever inflict on me.

وقد قادت فؤادي في هواها = فطاعَ لها الفؤاُد و ما عصاها

She led my
heart on into her love, and my heart willingly obeyed.

خضعتُ لها في الحبِ من بعد عزتي = و كلُّ محبٍ لل****ِ خاضعُ

I
surrendered to her love in spite of my pride; love makes lovers surrender one
to another.

وقفتُ لها قلبي وحبي وصبوتي = فما حفظت حبي غداةَ غيابي

To her I
devoted my heart, love and youth; yet she betrayed my love while I was away.

عذبي ما شئتِ قلبي عذبي = فعذابُ الحبّ أسمى مطلبي

Torture my
heart as you will; love’s torture is my ultimate desire.

بعضي بنار الهجر ماتَ حريقا = والبعض أضحى بالدموع غريقا

A portion
of me has been consumed by the fire of separation; Another portion drowned in
the flood of my tears.

قتلَ الوردُ نفسهُ حسداً منكِ = و ألقى دماهُ في وجنتيكِ

The rose,
envious of you, killed itself, and sprinkled its blood on your cheeks.

اعتيادي على غيابكِ صعبٌ = واعتيادي على حضوركِ أصعب

It is hard
to get used to being away from you; harder still to get used to being with you.

قد تسربتِ في مساماتِ جلدي = مثلما قطرة الندى تتسرب

Like a
tender dewdrop, you have made your way softly into me, through the pores of my
skin.

لكِ عندي وإن تناسيتِ عهدٌ = في صميم الفؤادِ غيرُ نكيثِ

Even if you
forget and no longer think of me, know that deep inside my heart, I will always
be loyal to you.

أرى جمالكِ في شعري
ومبتكري = وفي نشيدي وفي سمعي وفي بصري

I discern
your beauty in my verse and creativity; in my songs, my ears and eyes.

كأنَّ فؤادي ليس يشفي غليلهُ = سوى أن يرى الروحينِ يمتزجانِ

Nothing can
quench the thirst of my heart, save the mixing of our souls into one sssssssing
drink.

يا هاجري من غير ذنبٍ في الهوى = مهلاً فهجرُكَ والمنونُ سواءُ

Beloved,
don’t unnecessarily depart from me in haste; your departure is like death to my
soul.

أراكَ في نفحة الأزهارِ منتشراً = أراكَ في طلعة الأنوارِ في
السَحَرِ

I see you
wafting in the fragrance of flowers, in the blaze of light, in the early dawn.

عواصفُ بحر الحب عندي شديدةٌ = وأمواجه في مهجتي تتلاطمُ

Mighty are
the storms in my sea of love; its waves surge and break on the shores of my
heart.

فإنكَ أحلى في جفوني من الكرى = وأعذبَ طعماً في فؤادي من الأمنِ

You are
sweeter than drowsiness in my eyelids; more delightful than peace in my heart.

جسّ الطبيبُ يدي جهلاً فقلتُ لهُ = إن المحبة في قلبي فخلِّ يدي

The
physician unwittingly felt the pulse of my wrist; I said, love is in my heart,
doctor, please let go of my wrist.

أنتِ نورٌ بل نجمة الملاحِ = أنتِ بدرٌ بل أنتِ شمسُ الصباحِ

You are a
guiding light, the polestar of travelers; you are the shining moon and the
morning sun as well.

وصالكَ جنتي لكنّ نفسي = تفضّلُ في محبتكَ العذابَ

Intimate
communion with you is my heaven. My soul, however, prefers the agony of your
love.

وهل لي نصيبٌ في فؤادكِ ثابتٌ = كما لكِ عندي في الفؤادِ نصيبُ

Beloved,
have I a fixed place in your heart, like the permanent place you have in mine?

كم أنا... كم أنا أحبك حتى = إن نفسي من نفسها تتعجب

O, I love
you so much so, that even I myself sometimes wonder why I love you so much!

صليهِ لعلَّ الوصلَ يحييهِ واعلمي = بأنَّ أسيرَ الحبّ في أعظم
الأسرِ

Be
receptive to his love, revive his spirits; know that of all prisoners the
love-captive is the most confined.

سحرتني حبيبتي بسواد عينيها = إنما السحرُ في سواد العيونِ

My beloved
has charmed me with her dark eyes; dark eyes indeed are most charming.

فما غابَ عن عيني خيالكِ لحظة ً = ولا زال عنها والخيالُ يزولُ

Not for a
moment did your image ever leave me, nor has it vanished as images do.

نَصَبَ الحبُّ عرشهُ فسألناهُ= من تراهُ لهُ فدلّ عليكِ

When love
set up its throne, we asked: who might occupy such a magnificent throne? It
unmistakably pointed to you.

ورَمَتْ فؤادي مقلة ٌ فتـّانة ٌ = فغدوتُ من جيش الهوى مدحورا

Her
captivating eye pierced my heart with a magnetic arrow; defeating me thereby by
love’s unconquerable force.

ما كنتُ أؤمنُ في العيون و سحرها = حتى دهتني في الهوى عيناكِ

I never
believed in the inherent charming power of the eyes, up until I found myself
securely bound by yours.

وعذلتُ أهلَ العشق حتى ذقتهُ = فعجبتُ كيفَ (يحيا) من لا يعشقِ

I denounced
those who extol love, until I tasted of it; I forthwith wondered how people
could ever live without love!

الحسنُ قد ولاكِ حقاً عرشهُ = فتحكمي في قلبِ من يهواكِ

Beauty has
surrendered its throne to you; now you may command the heart that is in love
with you.

عذبة ٌ أنت كالطفولةِ كالأحـــ .... لامِ كاللحن كالصباح الجديدِ

You are as
sweet as childhood, as dreams and melodies, delightful as a new morn.

قصائدي قبلكِ يا حلوتي = كانت كلاماً مثل كل الكلام

My poetry,
before I knew you, my dear, was mere words, devoid of soul.

نسيتُ الهوى إلا هواكِ فإنهُ = تغلغلَ في الأعماق وانسابَ في دمي

I have forgotten
all love except yours; it has penetrated deep into my heart and now flows with
my lifeblood.

ولو أني خبأتكِ في عيوني = إلى يوم القيامةِ ما كفاني

Even if I
hide you in my eyes to the Day of Judgment, I would never have enough of you.

فإن أَتَيتُ إلى قلبي أعاتبهُ = ألقاهُ في غمرات الحبِ محترقا

When I try
to chide and dissuade my heart, I find it consumed in the roaring flames of
love.

للعاشقينَ نحولٌ يُعرفونَ بهِ = من طولِ ما حالفوا الأحزانَ والأرقا

Lovers are
identified by their leanness, due to their prolonged indulgence in sorrow and
sleeplessness.

أحبكَ فوقَ ما يصِف الكلامُ = و يهجرني إذا غبتَ المنامُ

I love you
more than words can tell; sleep abandons me when you are out of my sight.

لو أن رأسيَّ جُزَّ في مودّتها = لمرَّ يهوي سريعاً نحوها رأسي

If my head
were to sever from my ssss, it would dash headlong in her direction.

إنما الكونُ لعينيكِ رؤىً = و أنا الليلُ و أنتِ القمرُ

The cosmos
is visions to your eyes; I am the night and you are the moon.

لي حبيبٌ كملتْ أوصافهُ = حق لي في حبهِ أن أعذرا.

My beloved
is perfected in manners and traits; I am perfectly justified and satisfied,
loving her.

الحبُّ ينبوعُ الحياةِ تفجّرتْ = من راحتيهِ سعادةُ الأكوانِ

Love is the
fountainhead of life; from its hands gushes forth the happiness of all beings.

أتاني هواها قبلَ أن أعرفَ الهوى = فصادفَ قلباً خالياً فتمكنا

Her love
came to me before I had tasted love; finding an empty heart, it took possession
of it and never left.

يا قومُ أذني لبعض الحيّ عاشقة ٌ = والأذنُ تعشقُ قبلَ العينِ أحيانا

O people,
my ear has fallen in love with someone in your tribe; the ear, on occasion,
falls in love before the eye.

لو يُجازى المحبُ من فرط شوقٍ = لجزيتُ الكثيرَ من أشواقي

Should
lovers be rewarded for their intense love, my reward would have been immensely
great.

ذقتُ منها حلواً و مراً و كانت= لذة العشقِ في اختلاف المذاقِ

Her love to
my taste has been bittersweet; love is made delightful by flavors diversified.

حمليني في الحبِ ما شئتِ= إلا حادث الصدّ أو بلاء الفراقِ

Let me
experience, in loving you, whatever pain you wish me to endure; spare me,
however, the pain of rejection and separation from you.

يموتُ الهوى منّي إذا ما لقيتُها = ويحيا إذا فارقتُها فيعودُ

My passion
dies down when I am with her; it revives when no longer in her presence.

بثثتُ شكوايَ فذابَ الجليد = وأشفقَ الصخرُ ولانَ الحديد

I unleashed
the scorching heat of my love; melting thereby ice, softening rocks and

أحبكِ كالبدر الذي فاضَ نورهُ = على فيح جنات و خضر تلالِ

لا يعرف الشوقَ إلا من يكابده = ولا الصبابةَ إلا من يعانيها

No one
knows the extent of longing save he who has felt its twinges; nor the meaning
of romance except the love-stricken.

أنا والحبُ توأمانِ خـُلقنا = و تلانا في العشق كلُّ حبيبِ

Love and I
were born twins, followed by every other lover.

سلمى أحسّ النارَ سـائلة ً = بدمي وتجري معهُ في جسـدي

O Salma, I
feel the fire of love in my blood; coursing with it to every fiber of my ssss.

فتنتُ منكِ بأوصافٍ مجردةٍ = في القلب منها معانٍ ما لها صورُ

Your
abstract depictive portrayals have fascinated me; their formless meanings adorn
my heart.

فلو كان لي قلبانِ عشتُ بواحدٍ = وأبقيتُ قلباً في هواكِ يُعذب ُ

Had I two
hearts I would live with only one; leaving the other to the agony of your love.

أحبكِ حتى كأنّ الهوى = تجمّعَ و ارتاحَ في أضلعي

My love for
you is so great; I feel as if all loves have gathered and lodged in my heart.

وتعطلتْ لغة الكلامِ وخاطبتْ =عينيَّ في لغة الهوى عيناكِ

Speech was
rendered superfluous; your eyes conversed with mine, uttering the silent
ssssssss of love.

أشكو الغرامَ إليكم فاقبلوا شغفي = ولو شكوتُ لصخرٍ رق واحترقا

I complain
of the intensity of love I have for you; do therefore accept my engaging
fondness. Even rocks would soften and burn if they hear my plaintive
lamentations.

إن العيون التي في طرفها حَـوَرٌ = قـتـلننـا ثـمّ لم يُـحيينَ

واللهِ ما طلعتْ شمسٌ ولا غابتْ = إلا وذكركَ متروكٌ بأنفاسي

I swear to
you by God! I breathe your ssss at every sunrise, and fondly remember you at
every sunset.

سكرنا و لم نشرب من الخمر جرعة ً = ولكن أحاديثَ الغرام هي الخمرُ

We became
inebriated without sipping a single draught; romantic
words are lovers’ intoxicating wine
